ChatGPT reached a new milestone of $3 billion in global consumer spending on mobile as of this week, according to estimates from the app intelligence provider App figures. This figure represents total spending on iOS and Android devices since the app launched in May 2023, when it first arrived, and only on iOS thereafter.

It is striking that most of that expenditure took place this year. Globally, consumers spent an estimated $2.48 billion on the ChatGPT mobile app in 2025, up 408% year-over-year from the $487 million spent in 2024. In 2023, its first year of availability, the app earned $42.9 million before growing 1,036% to reach the 2024 figure.

These numbers represent a sharp increase in consumer adoption compared to other popular apps. For example, it took ChatGPT 31 months to reach $3 billion in consumer spending, but the top earner, TikTok, took 58 months, Appfigurs told TechCrunch.

ChatGPT also reached the milestone faster than popular streaming apps like Disney+ and HBO Max, which reached $3 billion in 42 and 46 months, respectively.

However, xAI’s Grok sees a similar revenue trajectory to ChatGPT, compared to other AI rivals.

Grok was released end of 2023 for X Premium Plus subscribers before it became more widely available last year. But when you compare the pace of consumer spending in AI apps, Grok came closest to matching ChatGPT’s cumulative revenue at the same point, once it started generating revenue. (You can see this in the chart below, which aligns the AI apps’ spend with when each app started generating revenue.)

While the $3 billion in spending represents significant consumer consumption, it is not the only way to measure AI app adoption or long-term revenue potential.

ChatGPT’s mobile customers purchase paid plans, such as the $20 per month ChatGPT Plus or the $200 per month ChatGPT Pro for advanced users. But AI apps can generate revenue in other ways, including through developer offers and, maybe soon for ChatGPTadvertisements. Additionally, ChatGPT launched its own app store of sorts on Wednesday, which the company suggests will be monetized in some way in the future. his blog post noted.

Google, meanwhile, is exploring options to transition its healthy search advertising business to AI-powered search, which places ads AI fashion, AI overviews, AI shoppingand more and more AI-powered Discover pageamong others.

Anthropic focuses on the business market and is reportedly on target for $70 billion turnover in 2028.
